Federal tax relief

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has extended various tax filing and payment deadlines:

  • Extended deadlines. Deadlines falling between Jan. 7, 2025, and Oct. 15, 2025, are postponed to Oct. 15, 2025. This includes individual income tax returns and payments originally due on April 15, 2025, and quarterly estimated tax payments due on Jan. 15, April 15, June 16, and Sept. 15, 2025.
  • Penalty relief. Penalties for payroll and excise tax deposits due between Jan. 7, 2025, and Jan. 22, 2025, will be abated if the deposits are made by Jan. 22, 2025.

State tax relief

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) and the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) have announced similar extensions:

  • Sales and use tax. For taxpayers in Los Angeles County, the sales and use tax filing deadline has been automatically extended from Jan. 31, 2025, to April 30, 2025.
  • State income tax. Taxpayers in Los Angeles County have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file their California state tax returns for the 2024 tax year and make any payments that would have been due between Jan. 7, 2025, and Oct. 15, 2025.
