Sound and successful long-term investing requires adherence to three core tenets: patience, knowledge and conviction. Where investors most often go wrong is by allowing emotions like fear and greed to interfere, which during market extremes can be difficult to avoid.

Scott in real life

What keeps you busy outside of work?

More work, actually. In addition to my career in wealth management, I’ve been a finance professor at East Carolina University since 1993 and served as Chair of the Department of Finance, Risk and Insurance at the school for 15 years before returning to a full-time faculty role in 2020.

How do you give back?

I’ve worked with many nonprofits over the years, serving on both City and County advisory boards, as Treasurer of The Pet Food Pantry of Eastern North Carolina, a 501(c)(3) providing free pet food, pet supplies, spay, neuter, and vet care services and disaster assistance to those in need in Eastern North Carolina, Board Member of Parents for Public Schools, and author of numerous weekly financial health articles in local and regional newspapers.

What’s one thing you are surprisingly good at?

Skiing. I spent five consecutive winters in Whitefish, Montana with more than 100 days on the slopes in the early 1980s, prior to returning to school to finish my B.S. degree in economics. My surgically repaired knees no longer allow me to ski, but I must admit that watching Lindsey Vonn’s highly successful return to World Cup ski racing in her 40s, after two knee replacements, is intriguing.
