Question

What happens to Social Security if the trust fund runs out?

Answer

The 2026 Trustees Report estimates the retirement trust fund could be depleted in late 2032, with continuing income covering about 78% of scheduled benefits. For the combined retirement and disability funds, the estimate is 2034, with continuing income covering about 83% of scheduled benefits. Social Security wouldn’t disappear, but benefits could be reduced unless Congress acts. Stress-testing your plan with a lower benefit can help you prepare.
