Question

What questions should I ask any financial advisor about conflicts of interest?

Answer

Mercer Advisors’ Form CRS lists specific questions the SEC requires investment advisers to invite prospects to ask, including:

  • How might your conflicts of interest affect me, and how will you address them?
  • How will you choose investments to recommend to me?
  • If I give you $10,000 to invest, how much will go to fees and costs and how much will be invested for me?
  • Do you have any disciplinary history?

Beyond those, strong evaluation questions include:

  • When does your fiduciary duty apply?
  • How are your advisors compensated, and are any incentives tied to specific products or services?
  • Do you offer proprietary or affiliated products, and how are those conflicts managed?
  • Who holds my assets, and where do I see independent account statements?

Mercer Advisors’ Form ADV Part 2A and Form CRS answer each of these questions in detail.
