Question

What is a QCD (qualified charitable distribution)?

Answer

A qualified charitable distribution is a direct transfer from a traditional IRA to a qualified charity, available once you reach age 70 ½. In 2026, the limit is $111,000 per person, indexed for inflation.

QCDs can count toward your required minimum distributions but aren’t included in taxable income. By reducing taxable income, this strategy may help limit exposure to higher IRMAA premium brackets and support certain tax-planning objectives.

A one-time $55,000 election may be used to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust — which may provide lifetime income to you or your spouse. This one-time election counts toward your annual QCD limit, and any remaining limit may be used for additional eligible charitable gifts during the year. You can use this election only once in your lifetime, and it must be completed in a single tax year. It can be an effective way to give.
