Question

What are Social Security survivor benefits?

Answer

Social Security survivor benefits allow a surviving spouse to claim benefits as early as age 60 (reduced) or in full at their own full retirement age. A surviving spouse can claim either their own benefit or the survivor benefit, then switch to the other later — a strategy that can maximize lifetime payouts. Remarrying after age 60 doesn’t affect eligibility. If you’re still working, your survivor benefit may be subject to the earnings test until you reach full retirement age.
