History of Mercer

The investment advisory company that was the forerunner of Mercer Advisors was formed in 1985 by Oregon lawyer Kendrick Mercer.

In 1986, the company moved to Santa Barbara, California. From offering investment advice, company services were expanded to include financial planning and investment management.

By 1989, the company was proving successful and was managing assets in excess of $245 million. To reflect its growing maturity, the name of the company was changed to Mercer Global Advisors (MGA).

Between 1989 and 2001, branch offices were opened in cities across the country, assets under management grew to over $1.4 billion and the firm received endorsements from medical and dental associations from coast to coast.

In 2001, MGA made the decision to add practice management expertise to its service offerings and merged with ExperDent – a practice management consultancy specializing in dental practices – to form a new company, Mercer Advisors, Mastery and Transitions.

From 2001 to 2008, the synergies of offering integrated practice management and financial management proved even more powerful than expected and the company experienced phenomenal growth, increasing the client base to some 3,300 health care professionals and increasing assets under management to a peak $3.9 billion in October 2007.

Recognizing that major investments in the firm were required to enable it to reach it’s full potential, in June 2008, the company owners were successful in securing capital from an outside investor. Renamed Mercer Advisors and with a new management team, the company is now poised to reach the next level of success.
